Smart Eating Guide

As we move into the holiday season, sweets, desserts, seasonal drinks, and extra treats tend to become a much bigger part of everyday life.

Often people focus on and worry about how to avoid all those sweets, when a more helpful strategy might be to focus on nourishing your body first and letting those sweet treats be a smaller part of enjoying the holidays.

There’s a difference between eating something sweet by itself and having it as part of a meal that also contains protein, vegetables, fiber and healthy fats. Eating sweet treats alone on an empty stomach causes a rapid spike in blood glucose and a subsequent energy crash, whereas eating them as part of a balanced meal leads to a slower, steadier release of sugar.

This graphic is a helpful tool to consider as you enjoy sharing meals with friends and family during the holidays.
