Caring for your Cognitive Health

Cognitive decline and diseases such as Alzheimer's are not an inevitability. For the vast majority of people, it is not primarily a matter of genetics, but rather, brain health is greatly impacted by lifestyle and nutrition choices. That is certainly encouraging news, but what can we do with that information?

As you know, I read a lot of scientific literature related to health and wellness issues, and one of the recurring themes related to cognitive health is the sooner you take care of your brain health, the better.

The science is increasingly clear that exercise, sleep, nutrition, hormone awareness, and social connection are not lifestyle extras. They are the foundation of a brain that works well into old age. Also, reducing inflammation is key, thus managing blood sugar and blood pressure are essential steps in protecting your brain long range. Finally, do all you can to protect your head from injury - that includes wearing your seatbelt, and wearing a helmet to protect your head during sports.

A few supplements that are considered the most important for brain health include:

OmegaGuard containing EPA and DHA is a practical supplement to nurture your brain. Of course a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean diet rich in healthy oils and fish is a great foundation too.

Creatine - for years we thought creatine was primarily a bodybuilding supplement, but new research shows substantial evidence for brain benefits. It supports cellular energy, metabolism, and helps counteract the impact of high stress and sleep deprivation.

Mindworks - a unique chardonnay grape seed polyphenol blend, a natural guarana extract, plus vitamins B6, B12, and folate work together to enhance short-term memory, sharpen focus, improve reaction time, protect against age-related cognitive decline, and support healthy circulation.

Mental Acuity Plus - a Shaklee exclusive formula that contains ginkgo, bilberry, hawthorn, and B vitamins to enhance memory and decision making.  It also helps lower homocysteine levels.

Stress Relief Complex - contains a combination of L-theanine, ashwagandha, beta-sitosterol, and L-tyrosine to relax the body and mind and support a relaxed state

A healthy brain comes from a decades long story written in daily choices. Your window of opportunity is open right now. The question is what you will choose to do with it.

Walking with friends is good for your brain in so many ways!
