Why Protein Matters

Protein is one of the three major macronutrients that provide the body with energy (the other two are carbohydrates and fats.) Protein is made up of long chains of amino acids, and nine of these amino acids are considered essential, meaning the body cannot produce them on its own. We must get them from the foods we eat.

What Does Protein Do For Your Body? A Lot!!

Protein plays a role in a wide range of essential processes that help keep your body functioning at its best.

Muscle and Tissue Support

Protein helps build and repair muscles - important at every age and stage

Metabolism and Healthy Weight Management

Protein supports metabolism and can help promote satiety, which may help with appetite control and healthy weight management.

Enzyme and Hormone Production

Many enzymes and hormones rely on protein to function properly, supporting important metabolic and regulatory processes in the body.

Hair, Skin, and Nail Health

Protein contributes to the structure of hair, skin, and nails, helping maintain their strength and appearance.

Immune System Support

Protein helps support immune function by contributing to the production of antibodies and other immune-related compounds.

How Much Protein Do You Need?

A helpful guideline for adults is:

Aim for about 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day.

For example:

150 pounds = about 120 grams of protein per day,125 pounds = about 100 grams of protein per day

If you are physically active, trying to build muscle, pregnant or breastfeeding, or working toward weight loss, your protein needs may be higher to help support muscle preservation and satiety.

If you want a more personalized estimate, consider using a Protein Tracker to calculate your daily protein intake. You may be surprised at what you learn! If you find you need more protein in your diet, reach out and I will help you with practical suggestions.
