Three Great Questions for Parents of Teens
One of my absolute favorite parts about being a Mom of teenagers was the wonderful conversations that often happened while cooking in the kitchen, while hiking on vacation, or perhaps while I was rebounding at the basketball hoop on the front driveway. I truly wanted to understand what my kids were thinking about and help them process both the fun and exciting things, as well as the challenging times.
Three questions that I think are great to open up and strengthen communication with your teenage kids (but actually, these are good for any age!) include:
1. Do you want me to just listen, or would you like my advice?
2. Which decision would make you the most proud?
3. How can I support you best today?
These types of questions allow your teen to come to you as they are processing and considering options. Using these questions shows your respect of their ability to make great choices while at the same time offering support when that would be helpful.
