Mindful Eating

The season from Halloween through New Years can be a minefield for people who want to feel healthy and truly live well. In this season of holiday cheer and encouraged excess, how do we enjoy the festive season while still prioritizing our health and remain true to our wellness goals?

One of the healthiest habits we can practice is mindful eating. This is not a diet or series of quick fix strategies, rather these are habits you can incorporate into your life all year long.

Here are the basics:

Slow down and appreciate your food. Take time to engage all your senses and really notice the color, smell, and texture of your foods.

Create a positive atmosphere. Eat at a real table with plates and utensils that create an atmosphere that is both calm and relaxed. Yes – you deserve to use real dishes even when the kids are little. Teach your kiddos how to set the table and be sure to ask a thoughtful question that each person at the table can answer. If you need some great ideas to encourage conversation, here is a link to great questions to ask your family.

Eliminate distractions. Turn off the TV and put away the cell phones. Focus solely on the experience of eating and connecting with the other people at the table.

Eat Slowly. Take time to chew and savor each bite. This will allow your body to catch up with your brain and recognize when you are full. An extra tip to help in this area is to put down your fork in between bites and chew thoroughly before you pick it up again.

Set yourself up for success. When at a buffet or party, position yourself away from the table full of food. At home, be mindful about the portion you serve yourself.

These are simple steps that are free, fun and actually easy to incorporate. Let me know if you enjoy adding them to your mealtime routine.
