If Our Ancestors Didn't Take Supplements, Why Do We Need Them Now?

It’s a fair question.
Our ancestors weren’t taking probiotics, omega capsules, and drinking protein shakes, yet many of them were incredibly resilient. They lived closer to the land, ate simply and relied on food, not supplements, for nourishment.
So why, in a modern world overflowing with all kinds of food, has supplementation become so common? Truth be told, our ancestors weren't necessarily always perfectly nourished and as healthy as we may like to believe, but it is also true that many of the biggest health concerns of our modern age were not prevalent in earlier times. A big reason for this change and these new concerns isn’t that our bodies have changed. It’s that our food has.
Historically, the healthiest populations shared one thing: they ate food where it was grown. They picked at peak ripeness, ate seasonally and consumed foods soon after harvest. Preservation, processing and long-distance transport were rare.
Today, that way of eating is trending again—but what was once a necessity for survival has become a luxury. Access to truly fresh, unaltered food in America often requires more time, money and proximity to high-quality sources than is realistic for many families. We’ve learned that the longer food is separated from its root or source, the more nutritional value it loses. This happens because:
Nutrients degrade over time
Soil quality has declined
Produce is picked early for transport
Foods are bred for visual appeal and shelf life, not nutrient density
We’re eating plenty of food, but many of us are under-nourished. Modern life is different and many factors contribute to this concept of being overfed but undernourished:
Ultra processed foods - many of the convenient products available today are full of calories and taste good but are not nourishing
Excessive sugar intake - of course desserts are laden with sugar, but even healthier sounding options like yogurt, peanut butter and protein bars can contain a lot of sugar
Overworked digestive systems - having an out of balance gut microbiome is very common today
Abundance of choices and attractive packaging can make grocery shopping overwhelming
Supplements didn’t become popular because people stopped caring about health, they emerged because modern life created nutritional gaps. Additionally recent advances in science have allowed us to collect real data from blood work to identify deficiencies. Thus we have learned that smart supplementation can be tremendously important.
A New Perspective
So, back to the question of why we need supplements when our ancestors didn't. Needing supplements doesn’t mean we’re failing, it means we’re adapting.
We live in a very different world than our ancestors, and supplements can help bridge the gap between how we eat today and what our bodies still need.
When used intentionally and sourced wisely, they’re not a replacement for real food, they’re a smart tool to help us live well.
Choose Wisely
As with so many products from appliances to automobiles, not all supplements are created equal. Because this is a booming industry, sourcing and purity matter more than ever.
Choosing a trusted brand means prioritizing product development, scientific integrity, quality testing, and ingredients that support the body rather than overwhelm it.
Thankfully, we have the option to purchase these from Shaklee - the most clinically proven wellness company in the world, who does more clinical studies and quality controls testing than any other company.
