Habits That Could Be Harming Your Brain

Your brain works nonstop, managing thoughts, memories, mood, and decision-making. However, everyday habits could be speeding up your cognitive decline. And it’s not just the obvious choices that could be pressing the accelerator on your brain aging. Here are the seven most common culprits—and what you can do about them:

1. Skimping on Sleep

During deep sleep, your brain activates its "trash removal" system, clearing metabolic waste and consolidating memories. Your brain needs consistent 7–9 hours nightly to stay sharp and resilient.

2. Sitting for Most of the Day

Even light movement throughout the day can support healthy circulation and brain oxygenation. Schedule times to stand up, stretch, walk around the block.

3. Living in Constant Stress Mode

Chronic stress raises cortisol exposure which over time can impair your brain's memory hub. Deep breathing, sunlight exposure, and stepping away from stressful situations are necessary steps for long-term brain and overall health.

4. Ultra-Processed Food

Diets high in refined sugar and processed fats are linked to increased inflammation and poorer cognitive performance. Once again – make sure you choose veggies, fruits, and protein for each meal.

5. Skipping Meals Leading to Blood Sugar Swings

Your brain runs primarily on glucose. Healthy meals spaced regularly throughout the day help provide the consistent fuel your brain needs to stay sharp.

6. Excessive Screen Time

High screen usage is associated with reduced attention control and memory performance. Though computers are part of everyday life, it is important to regulate use even for adults. Your brain thrives on focused, single-task engagement—not constant tab-switching and notification-chasing. Be sure to schedule screen breaks into your day, every day.

7. Lack of Mental & Social Stimulation

Cognitive engagement and strong social ties are associated with brain health. Novelty and connection build cognitive reserves. Learn something new, call a friend, join a community, your brain needs both challenge and connection to flourish.

The bottom line: These concepts are not new, but we can all benefit from the reminder to take care of your brain and mental health. Small shifts in your daily routine can create profound changes in your brain's long-term health.

Of course a healthy diet, exercise and sleep are foundational for brain health.  If you find you could benefit from additional support, here are a few fabulous products to consider:

Mental Acuity + contains ginkgo, bilberry, hawthorn, and B vitamins to enhance memory and decision making.  It also helps lower homocysteine levels.

Mindworks contains a unique chardonnay grape seed polyphenol blend, a natural guarana extract, plus vitamins B6, B12, and folate. The ingredients in MindWorks have been shown in multiple clinical and laboratory studies to significantly enhance short-term memory, sharpen focus, improve reaction time, protect against age-related cognitive decline, and support healthy circulation.

Stress Relief Complex promotes a calm, relaxed state using a blend of L-theanine, ashwagandha, beta-sitosterol, and L-tyrosine to help reduce feelings of stress without causing drowsiness.
