Have you ever wondered about common cravings that pregnant women experience? Are they just silly superstitions or are they related to a need? Truth is, the scientific evidence is not completely clear. Some theories suggest pregnancy hormones can heighten sense of smell and taste, creating both cravings and aversions. Other theories suggest that cravings for foods such as pickles, ice cream and sweet or salty snacks may have some basis in nutritional science and are the body's way of compensating for deficiencies. When we crave pickles or ice cream, the body may be asking for nutrients such as minerals, specifically calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.
The First 1000 Days of life from conception to age 2 are some of the most important in a person’s life. Good nutrition during this stage builds the foundation for a child’s ability to grow, learn and thrive. A child’s brain, immune system and skeleton development are all impacted by the nutritional health of Mom.
When looking at supporting healthy pregnancies, one of the most significant, simple, and economical interventions we can make is to provide adequate prenatal nutrition. Studies show that food intake alone is not enough. Prenatal supplementation is a critical component of contributing to healthy pregnancies.
A study published in the April 2023 Journal of Clinical Nutrition studied 6 key nutrients (Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Omega 3) that are considered most essential for supporting healthy prenatal development. Even with 391 prenatal products included in the study, Shaklee products stood out as #1. Superior to everything else on the market!
If you or someone you know may be pregnant in the near future (I love to have people think about preparing for a healthy baby 2 to 5 years before pregnancy!!) I’d be happy to share more information to help you make smart choices
